Baseball and Birthdays

It’s the end of October, which means that it’s baseball post-season, which means I am one happy girl. :)

A few weekends ago my grandpa turned 90! I was able to get the weekend off from work so me and Andrew drove back home to St. Louis. My family threw a big party for him and he only had two complaints the entire day, which – trust me – is a success. I think what cracks me up the most is that we catered Lee’s Chicken for it, but my grandpa loves Lee’s Chicken so whatever floats his boat. Love that guy to pieces.

Becky’s birthday was actually back in August (she turned 20! I feel so old), but I’m a lousy best friend so I wasn’t able to get her present to her until that weekend. I saw this thing on Pinterest for DIY mugs, so I thought I’d give it a shot. I bought some fairly plain white coffee mugs from the store and then drew on them in Sharpie. I cooked them in the oven at 350F for about thirty minutes and they turned out great. I was really proud of my drawing (since I am so awful and Missouri is a bit of a hard state to draw, haha). I’m hoping they hold up over time after washes and everything.

It was great to go home as well since St. Louis’ baseball team, the Cardinals, made the playoffs. They don’t appreciate them quite as much in Kansas City, so it was a ton of fun to watch a few games with my family. :)

I am not liking my job as much as I did originally. There’s just so much crap that I have to deal with, from customers and from employees and management. I forgot just how awful minimum wage jobs are. I am very thankful that I do have a job (and I love free movies) but I don’t think I’m going to be staying there for a long period of time. I’m hoping that in a year or so I will be able to find some kind of internship, but we’ll see. Plus, I work so much more than I want to (4 days and 30 hours a week), which is stressful when I have¬† a lot of tests and homework going on. But I’m just taking one day at a time.

When I was heading to work the other day, I was sitting at a stop light when the pick-up truck behind me ran into me. At first, I was just so shocked that I didn’t even understand what happened. I though the person behind the truck must have ran into him so he ran into me. It was right by a bus stop so all the people waiting there had this appalled look on their faces with with mouths hanging open. Looking back now, their faces were pretty funny.

So I pulled over in one of the parking locks and got out, apprehensive to see what damage had done by the truck on my tiny little car. As soon as I got out, the guy asked, “You okay, baby?” I appreciated his concern, but it kind of ticked me off he called me baby. First of all I’m not a child, and second I’m not your girl. I looked at the back of my car and didn’t see any apparent damage so I took a deep breath and felt a lot better. He then went onto some long, sob story about how he didn’t have insurance, would go to jail, would lose his kid to his crack-whore baby mama, so I shouldn’t file a claim.

I didn’t see any damage, but I was still very apprehensive to just let him drive off. I managed to finally get his information (though he kept saying that I was going to file a claim and put him in jail, but in that regard, it’s not my fault you’re illegally driving without insurance and ran into me). I managed to somehow still make it to work on time, and after I got off, I went to Andrew’s to make sure nothing really was wrong. Both him and his roommate looked at it and said it was fine.

I’ve never been so proud of my dinky card going up against a truck and coming out without a scratch. :)

So I’m just spending my Saturday night watching the Cards in the World Series. (Series is tied, 1-1 if anyone besides me actually cares :P). And eating chocolate. And brownies. And ice cream.

Homework? What’s that? ;)

  1. I’m proud of you for not freaking out when the guy ran into your car. What ticks me off is the fact that this guy tried to give you a sad sob story to not file a claim. Well, you should have been paying attention in the first case, and not rear ended the driver in the second. Man, it irritates me when someone calls me their baby, or some other nick name knowing that I’m not their girl. I especially hate it when men go on Facebook (especially those that are half way around the world) hitting on you even though they see ON your profile that you’re in a relationship. About a month ago, I had gotten hit on by someone that wasn’t even original. He tried sweet talking me, and literally told me I’m beautiful but you already know that etc.etc. man did that piss me off. I hate it that men can think they can get into a girls pants or something with ‘sweet talk’ knowing they are in a relationship. I was hit on by several people at the apartment complex I used to live at. One even asked me if I had a boyfriend and I said yes I do and I’m very happy with him. Than the next thing I know I’m being invited over to his place for a movie session. It’s like WTF!? The same with that dude – It isn’t my fault you are driving with out insurance, and it isn’t my fault you had hit my car! So he should have to pay, but I’m glad you came out with out a scratch.

I know it was hard trying to get a relationship going for thirty years or less with my mom and her side of the family. When my Grandmother aka Nana passed away – no one told me, yet I was put in her obituary as survived by Granddaughter Jamie blah blah. It’s like WTF? I don’t have a relationship with her and you name me as a survivor? Oh well, it was really hard to try and swallow my pride about that matter, and especially trying harder for them to be even more in my life when my boyfriend asked me if he was going to meet my mom. In the end – all you can say is I can’t blamed for trying – because I did. But yeah I couldn’t cope the feelings of regret anymore, and I am glad I told her how I felt about their lies and what not. Both my mom and my aunt who lives in the same state – wanted me to come up there using my money. But I was lied to again saying oh we’re a team. blah blah blah. No we’re not – if we were, we would’ve had a family relationship long ago, but we don’t. So how are we a team? I just had to tell her. And I haven’t heard a word from her since or any other family member. :).

  2. Wow, turning 90 is quite a feat. I hope I get to live that long. Happy Belated birthday to both your grandfather and your best friend!

Wow, I remember the accident that my husband had a few years ago and though it barely was a bump, there was no need to get insurance people called because my father in law knew mechanics that could fix it and fix it they did.

Still, it’s dangerous on the road and I’m glad you’re okay! I’m glad you didn’t panic or anything when he started saying those things, but he really should have had insurance but oh well. Some people aren’t very smart about it. Still, despite the stress, you seem very happy and for which I am glad! ^_^

    Those mugs are quite cute!

Yay for parties and boo for dealing with stress when it comes to job. I hope that front gets better for you.

  3. You don’t often hear that people are turning 90 these days! :) Glad that he is still around! ^^ Happy Belated birthday to you all! ;)

I’m glad that you’re okay after the accident that you had. I’m proud of you that you didn’t freak out. I would go crazy if I was standing in your shoes. XD

  4. Wow, 90. Good on your granddad!

Those mugs look so, so cute. I really want to DIY a mug now, except my artistic talents are truly non-existent. Genuinely, all I can draw is stickmen.

My old job was minimum wage (hello, I was a potwasher) and after three weeks I just wanted to die, ha. It was grim. I was basically the kitchen lackey…

Sheesh, the truck dude sounds like a douchebag. Har de har har, no one cares about your ballsy sob story, loser.

Ahh! I don’t know how you add buddies but my username on NaNoWrimo is tonightless (I’m so original).

After I posted that post I was like “oh God no one is going to get what I’m getting at” but you did so, ugh, just mega-love okay?? And thank you! You’re so lovely.

Well for NaNoWrimo I’m writing a Merlin fanfiction so you might not want to read it at all. :P

    Take care! xx

  5. Happy birthday to your grandpa! That’s great that you were able to take off from work and celebrate with your family!

Ooh, I like the idea of DIY mugs. It’s a cute and very personal gift! The message on it is sweet :)

That’s too bad about your job though. It sounds hard to juggle that much work with school, and dealing with customers can be rough. I stopped doing webdesign freelancing because I didn’t want to deal with clients anymore. Hopefully you’ll find an internship later that is better!

I’m glad your car is ok! I’ve been rear ended by a truck a couple times, and I was not as lucky those times. That’s annoying that he tried to get out of giving you his information. It’s his fault, so he needs to take responsibility. If you run into someone like that again, you can always get a cop involved so a police report is filed on it.

  6. Happy belated birthday to your friend and granddad! :)

Searching for enjoyable work is difficult nowadays, and the minimum wage jobs do make it feel like a dead-end road with nowhere to go. I wish you the best of luck finding an internship that can lead you to better jobs. :/

I never thought that getting caught driving without an insurance could lead you to jail time. That is, as long as you can pay for the damages, I thought that should be okay. Then again, the question is, is the car insured? There’s a difference between an uninsured car and and uninsured driver. :/ I’m glad to read that you and your car’s okay though. That’s the most important thing.

  7. Aww, happy belated birthday to your grandpa! 90 is a grand old age :D

Glad you didn’t freak out in that car situation! I honestly don’t know what I would have done – probably shouted at him and then started shouting. Lol. I’m melodramatic like that.

    Love the mugs!

  8. Aww, happy birthday to your grandpa! You’re so lucky that you still got to spend time with him. I never got to know my grandparents and I feel like I missed out on a lot of potentially happy moments with them.

It was great that you didn’t lose your cool when the accident happened! I hate it when people just don’t own up to their mistakes and make you feel bad for filing a claim. Especially when they use sob stories like that. -_- I seriously don’t know what I would have done if I were in your position!

  9. i did the sharpie mug thing i saw on pinterest but was mistaken when i read sharpie they ment a sharpie painting pen – the regular marker doesnt work :( looks awesome but overall washes off. did you use the painting sharpie pen?
